Rain has done a lot of interviews that seem to only defend or explain TLJ...

Don't recall a director having to constantly explain scenes in a movie like Rain has had to lately...just tons of stories where he has to explain astral projection, Lukes fate, why Snoke did not matter, Leias space walk, Leias survival, Rey's lineage, Lukes lightsaber...and the list goes on! That feels like a huge amount of explaining...especially for a Star Wars movie...

He should have released a book along with this poor attempt at movie making to explain the shitshow that is Rian's god-awful script.

From the article that Deliciousfeet listed :

“Personal growth is inherent to every Star Wars story. Without the detour to Canto Bight, Finn wouldn’t have grown past only caring about himself and his immediate circle of friends. And Rose wouldn’t have discovered her own ability to be the type of hero she idolized.”

Three things here:
1) In an article that is defending the existence of Rose's character, using her motivation is irrelevant. Rose's having the problem of not being able to be the type of hero she idolized is only a problem if she is introduced. Introducing a character to solve a problem that only exists because the character in introduced is not a reason to introduce the character.

2) Did ANYONE coming into The Last Jedi feel Finn had a problem with "growing past caring about himself and his immediate circle of friends"? He left the First Order because he cared about people he never even met let alone was in his " immediate circle of friends". I am sure he had friends on the Star Killer base that are now dead because of him.

3) "Personal growth is inherent to every Star Wars story." I agree with this, so why was all of Luke's personal growth from Episodes 4,5 and 6 ignored. He started as a brat who let his emotions control him to became a person who realized that letting your emotions control you is the way to the dark side. He realized this when he cut off Vader's hand and saw the similarities between himself and Vader and that if he let his emotions control him he will follow Vader to the Dark side. Yet, in The Last Jedi all of that character development is thrown out in one scene and we are to believe that one bad day makes Luke revert back to his old self?
