Anyone remember the steam iron "coming in to land"?

This is the intro scene to Finn, Rose and DJ infiltrating Snoke's Star Destroyer and dressing up as First Order crew - the scene starts with the weird ship that looks like it's coming in to land, but it turns out to be a steam iron in the laundry section. Did anyone else think that was very ill-placed humour? No-one else seemed to notice, but I thought it was incredibly cheesy. Rian Johnson will do anything to dramatise anything minor.

I saw it in 3D and didn't even notice that.

I noticed, thinking “ship looks like an iron”. It was funny.

I liked it!

And thought it was an in-joke reference to Boba Fett's flatiron-shaped ship.

Yes, very cheesy.

The prank call on Hux, the iron, and the scene where Leia and Holdo both try to say "may the force..." simultaneously. All three of those are more like cheap sitcom humor. They really stuck out like sore thumbs.

These serve to illustrate the general perception of Star Wars on the part of RJ and quite possibly Disney. It’s devolved to a kind of self-parody.

But the bits of humor in Force Awakens were so well done, so perfect, PLUS they were truly natural.

Like BB-8 flying around the Falcon and securing himself with those wires. That was amusing and fantastic.

Kylo cutting up that room and having the Stormtroopers turn back on their rounds -- That was absolutely perfect humor for the context, and completely belonged in Star Wars.

When it comes to Last Jedi, I really believe Rian Johnson used the overstuffed humor to compensate for a lack of ideas and also for a weak "drive" behind the plot. Without the jokes, the movie would be kind of boring (and it did have boring parts anyway). He also compensated with "big scenes" that were honestly quite gimmicky (even if I did like them). Space Leia and Hologram Luke are both well done scenes, but still gimmicky.

The biggest thing Rian Johnson did to compensate is that he repeated concepts A LOT in this movie. I made a list of them and I had to keep adding. Things like: Two herds of four legged animals assist heroes in two different scenes; Two people kamikaze another ship, and it was going to be three because Finn was trying to do it too; I believe FOUR different scenes where a "gotcha" trick is used to stall for time; Two characters violently throw doors into a room to get to their ally.

I need to go get that list from where I last posted it and save it in a text file, because there are about twice as many as I could remember off the top of my head there.

I didn’t mind the prank call. It was opening night and everyone laughed so I was ok with it. What followed was awesome. The steam iron was fun the first time only. The Holdo /Leia “May the fourth be with you” did make me cringe.

I didn't mind the prank call either, but I still found it out of place and wish it had been more of a quick joke instead of being dragged out and used as a legitimate distraction technique.

Totally agreed on Leia/Holdo, very very cringe.

The most Spaceball-ish moment of the movie.
