Visual Dictionary implies Snoke is from the outer unknown regions

So yeah, no real origin, he's just another bad, powerful Force user.

Now this article mentions something that's come up a lot, including a point I've made but have subsequently changed my mind about:

even outright saying Snoke’s backstory wouldn’t be revealed. This approach is very comparable to Emperor Palpatine in the original trilogy, where the words “Palpatine” and “Sith” were never even uttered on screen. Most of what fans knew about Palpatine came from the Expanded Universe, and, eventually, the prequels.

The only problem with this is that while the Emperor did not have a backstory in the original trilogy, the fact that he's called "emperor" does give him a CONTEXT. We know what emperors are, and that they rise to political power in one way or another.

It would have been a bit better if Snoke was at least given his own context, but in the end it really is just something that would end up becoming another piece of Star Wars trivia and not much else.

Also, this from the link:

These Attendants/Navigators have enlarged brains that can “process multidimensional calculations” which would be key to traversing the mostly uncharted space between the known galaxy and Unknown Regions.

Sounds exactly like the navigators from Dune.

Snoke is called "Supreme Leader". Same difference.

Well, sorta, except that the First Order isn't any kind of government entity, while the Empire was.

This is like the difference between President Trump, and the leader of some cult. Just hearing "President" gives Trump a context we're familiar with, while a cult leader's place begs for a bit more information.

Snoke was a "Supreme Leader" who rose to political power in one way or another.

Snoke was one of my favorite elements of this movie, not to mention that stunning CGI done for his face, and I thought the choice to dispatch him was a good one.

I'm okay with him coming from nowhere specific and knowing nothing substantial about him. It's basically just room for someone to write a Star Wars novel about him.

And like I said, realistically his "origin" would just be more Star Wars trivia and nothing else.
