Luke's Finale (Spoilers)

Would've been epic if he was actually there and was able to deflect or survive all that firepower focused on him before doing some decent fights with Ren (who still swings his saber like a scrawny person holding a 2 handed heavy sword). I don't get why they killed him off so quickly while Leia survived (when the actress is already dead). Guessing they'll be CGI-ing the fuck out of it on Ep 9.

Also, they seem to be pulling the Marvel shtick by putting in slap stick comedy jokes here and there like at the beginning with Hux and near the end.

Well yeah, I expected Luke to have a nice Gandalf vs Balrog 'force' shield bubble around himself as the AT's went balls out with the laser fire.

Instead, he wasn't actually there. Not sure if I should be impressed or annoyed, really.

reply

Can someone explain to me why and how Luke died. He was not actually there and as far as we know received no injuries. Was this meant as a self sacrifice so he can become more powerful dead like obi wan??

reply

KK and bad writing killed him.

reply

I think it was the strain of projecting himself across the galaxy for an extended period of time.

That, and after shutting himself off from The Force for so many years, he totally gave himself to it, merged with it and became one with it. As with Obi-Wan, his death was an ascent to a greater level of existence; and was more a fulfillment of his desire for peace of mind and death than a tragedy. In doing what he did, Luke found what he'd been looking for for twenty years.

As for those who were complaining about him not appearing in person, his appearance as an astral projection was both more effective in achieving his objective and in making an awesome movie confrontation than an in-person battle would have been. We've all seen light-saber battles, I liked that the scene went in an unexpected direction.

Totally agreed. The Force projection didn't exhaust him to the point of death, or else we'd have to assume that Kenobi's lightsaber fight with Vader also exhausted him to the point of death. No, they both gave themselves up to the Force in order to help others.

reply

Ok yes this was also what i was assuming. He has become the current obi wan in these movies and will be able to guide rey. Not surprised if we see his force ghost next movie.

reply

The sunset convinced him just to will himself to die.

reply

I think it's pretty obvious Luke will be in the next movie and I'm surprised people keep missing the reason why.

reply

Obviously!

If he wants to keep training Rey he can, and bring Yoda along for the advanced lessons.

reply

Which was why I was disappointed in the finale battle. Cause for the next movie he'll be in passive hermit mode for most of it in his permanent astral projected form while guiding Rey. Then again, we did see cringey Yoda (for the beginning part that is) burn that tree so maybe there is hope that he can still do some things from the dimension beyond.

On the other hand, Rey didn't need much guidance to begin with seeing how she started training on her own for the most part before leaving.

She's like Luke in TESB, he used the Force in a spirit of anger and revenge, and lost badly and almost got suckered into joining the Dark Side. He could do Force tricks, which seem to be grasped easily by people with enough innate power, but he totally lacked the wisdom to use it without doing more harm than good. Rey's pretty much in the same place, and could definitely use a mentor to keep her from flirting with the Dark Side again.

Maybe the original plan was to have Leia as that mentor, as they were in the REBELLION together. Leia is wise about everything including the Force, kind, and might want someone to mother as much as Rey wants a parental figure. Sad it can't happen.
