Christmas gift for the "remake" critics

I like the throwback remixed nostalgia in both this and TFA, but if you don't, here is my ongoing analysis of ESB and TLJ comparisons:

Small character-centric story without a lot of impact to the overall saga.

Starts with Destroyers in orbit attacking a Resistance/Rebel base while the Resistance/Rebels try to escape in transports.

Resistance/Rebels on the run, followed closely for the entire movie by First Order/Empire.

Heroes need to find a place to hide out and get help... Just like ESB.

NEW ADDITION 12/20: PROBLEM WITH USING HYPERDRIVE TO ESCAPE IS CENTRAL TO THE PLOT! Damn!

Escaping the First Order using a cavern, just like in the asteroid field, but this time it worked.

Elsewhere far away on a green planet, a Jedi trainee meets with his/her Master and trains, until he/she leaves to go help the battle.

The Master is in self-exile on this green planet, by the way, and has been there for a long time.

The self-exiled Master is also not what was expected, at least not at first.

The Master speaks with the ghost of another past Jedi Master after the apprentice leaves.

The Apprentice goes into a "dark-side hole" to have a personal Force-driven experience.

Hoth 2.0 at the end. Even has a trench for soldiers, large guns mounted behind them, and huge heavy blast doors that lower down. White salt instead of snow, walkers, Rebel speeders that can't get far off the ground. Battle is mostly holding off the walkers until they can all escape.

NEW ADDITION 12/20: LUKE CONFRONTS THE WALKERS ALONE, ON FOOT.

A couple who is separated from the rest of their allies begin to grow closer, so Rose/Finn mirror what Leia/Han went through in ESB.

Rose and Finn visit a nice casino full of gamblers. Han and Leia visit a nice Cloud City which is run by a gambler with swagger.

NEW addition 1/9: While in the casino or cloud city, a droid is messed around with by one or more short creatures.

Canto Bight has a private police force flying around, just like Cloud City.

The help they find on Cloud City / Canto Bight does a double-cross eventually.

NEW addition 1/10: The two who go to Cloud City / Canto Bight are imprisoned together while there.

NEW addition 1/9: The burgeoning couple who was separated on their adventure (Finn/Rose, Han/Leia) also have an unexpected kiss during a tense and dangerous moment near the end. Also, the one who initiated the kiss ends up being unconscious, for one reason or another, at the end of the movie.

Super Star Destroyer introduced in ESB, Snoke's Star Destroyer introduced here.

Snoke's hologram is just a big head now, like the Emperor's hologram in ESB.

NEW ADDITION 12/20: IMPERIAL/FIRST ORDER OFFICER ABUSED/CHOKED BY THE FORCE OVER TELECOMMUNICATION WITH HIS SUPERIOR AS PUNISHMENT FOR FAILURE.

Ends with "well it's time to regroup with the rest and try another fight on another day."

C-3P0 reciting the odds of survival.

Of course, the new main character hears bad news about his/her parent(s).

I'm trying to be comprehensive, so if you see anything I missed, please add! HAL 9010 already added the double-cross, which was a comparison I didn't think about.

I didn't mean to bump this at first, I had the wrong thread, which is why my other post is deleted.... But ended up having additions anyway.

When you deleted your post on IMDb, it would reverse the "bump" and send the topic back to where it was.

Interesting to see that doesn't happen here.

Good call. Here's a few suggestions, some may be insignificant.

Main character waking up in hospital bed after near fatal experience. TLJ: Finn (Kylo Ren fight), Leia (missile hit, hypothermia), ESB: Luke (Wampa attack, hypothermia).

Main character asleep/coma in a restraining device: Finn, medical pod, Han, carbonaite.

Female main character telling male character that she loves him: Leia/Han, Rose/Finn.

Main characters riding on alien horse-like creatures.

Jedi master eating questionable foods. Yoda: Root stew, Luke: Green milk.

The master is more or less unwilling to train the learner.

Submerged X-wing on exile planet.

reply

Good call... Although I would compare Finn's water-bag medical device to Luke in the Bacta tank, instead of Han in carbonite. Also I almost added the "alien steeds" to my topic as well when I updated it this morning.

One more you made me think of: Jedi Master (Luke/Yoda) dismissively tossing thing(s) over his shoulder that the apprentice brought along.

So where is the Christmas gift for those of us that loved TFA and only wanted to see a advancement of the story it presented? 🤕 This one felt a bit like a lump of coal...but hey...trump is trying to make coal great again too sooo....😉

reply

Yeah I was actually reflecting just 10 minutes ago about how promising and meaty the story hints were in Force Awakens. It felt like a real glimpse at a grand tale.

Last Jedi was much more straightforward and small, it didn't feel like the workings of a greater galaxy.

I'm going to watch TFA again. I do have the 3D blu-ray box set, and I haven't looked at the special features yet either.

reply

So basically, IX will rehash Jedi?

The throne room scene has already been done. The Vader-like character already turned against the Emperor-like character and killed him in order to save the Luke-like character.

There's no more Starkiller base and they definitely won't do another one, so that's out. Maz's castle was already a reference to the cantina AND Jabba's palace.

All that's left is the Ewoks, really.

I think 9 will be Abrams making a real sequel to his Force Awakens, and picking up stuff that Rian didn't touch, like the Knights of Ren. Maybe he'll have Kylo being a liar about Rey's parents, maybe not. Maybe Rey was actually the youngest student at Luke's school, and Kylo just couldn't bring himself to kill her, so he took her to Jakku.

Personally, I would do a First Order civil war. Hux was going to kill Kylo when he saw him knocked out in Snoke's throne room, he was reaching for his gun, and the two of them are at odds with each other. It's time for the First Order to split and for the two sides to go at war with each other.

Then Kylo's side will win, but since Leia had died before the movie started and he had secretly watched her funeral, he realizes he has no one left to be angry at. Snoke is gone, Hux is gone, his parents are gone, Luke is gone... He will realize how futile his anger is, and he will give up on the dark side.

One can only hope, because this wasn’t really a sequel at all.

reply

I agree with you about Kylo turning good at the end of 9. I was thinking the same thing as I was watching TLJ.

reply

Well, it was also already spoiled after Carrie Fisher died. The producers said that a big "making amends" scene between Leia and Kylo had been planned, and thus the entire movie would need to be reworked to compensate for her absence.

GROAN

I might've guessed. What a load of CRAP.

Not at your list here, Frogarama, but at the so-called filmmakers who have lied to us about TLJ being an original story.

That does it, Star Wars is dead. They have taken the best trilogy and rehashed TWO of the three main movies and presented them as something entirely new, where they not only AREN'T but are INFERIOR to the originals.

Disney, playing it safe and not taking risks is taking it BORINGLY!

EDIT: What's wrong with the text and quote formatting? It doesn't seem to work properly anymore.

reply

This won't help... I added: NEW addition 1/10: The two who go to Cloud City / Canto Bight are imprisoned together while there.

Foebane, I can understand kicking off a new trilogy with something largely familiar, and Phantom Menace was the same way. It's almost a tradition.

However, even though I didn't hate Last Jedi, it really is a missed opportunity to take the story somewhere else. Hell, I remember when the casting for Benicio Del Toro was first announced well over a year ago, and it said that he was the new villain (which was a VERY early spoiler now that I reflect on it! How the hell did that get out?).

I had the impression that the "First Order" was largely destroyed on Starkiller Base, and that the remaining personnel (Snoke, Hux, Kylo) would be working on their own with no "imperial army" behind them. That feeling, coupled with Del Toro as the new villain, seemed very promising at the time.

As for taking the story new places, I kept hearing feedback and reviews on Last Jedi that it's a "new direction" for Star Wars and how it was daring or brave or what not, but I still don't understand why.

It wasn't the subverting of expectations, that was done in Empire with Vader being Luke's father. Rian Johnson even said he wanted to reflect that with Rey, she and Luke both heard the hardest thing they could hear about their parents. Of course, Vader killed the Emperor suddenly just like Kylo did.

I saw a Last Jedi fan on a GeekTyrant comment thread explaining some of the apparent new directions, and they were all descriptions of stuff that had been done in Star Wars in the original trilogy. The only one I remember was that she was marveling at how this movie isn't so black-and-white, good-versus-evil, but explored the shades of gray (Fifty Shades of Rey lol) that the original trilogy apparently ignored.

I pointed out how incorrect that was, how Empire did that and how the redemption finale of Return of the Jedi was literally ALL ABOUT shades of gray.

Oh and fyi, the only thing about formatting I can think of is that quote, italics and bold can only be used once each. If you try using any of them twice, it is messed up.

Url can be used repeatedly.

Is that the kind of problem you were having?

reply

It looks like it. Quite a shame, really. Then again, I should've suspected, judging by the other posts on this site.

reply

Good point. The comparisons are there.

reply

Thanks. I'm glad you posted in the Spaceballs topic too, I was going to ask about that. I was surprised at how solid the few comparisons were. The shield over Druidia compared to Rogue One really makes me wonder if there are intentional homages to Spaceballs in the new Star Wars movies.
