2 days away and no buzz?
Where is everyone? The Ackbars are lonely.
shareIts a sad day in the galaxy when no one is talking about a Star Wars movie.
shareSince about the end of the prequel trilogy perhaps?
shareAt least the prequels were all original.
shareI don't feel TFA is much of a recycle of ANH though, like how the others were saying. J.J. Abram/Disney just took a lot of notes from "A Hero's Journey" motif the same way George Lucas did for the whole original trilogy and pre-trilogy. TFA also seems to fall into that hero's journey path very well to stand on its own too, all while still remaining the truest to the Star Wars lore. It offers some references and elements to the OT as a homage, much like what the PT had done too. But that's only my opinion.
share"At least the prequels were all original."
A Phantom Menace is essentially an homage to A New Hope, just like The Force Awakens is.
Here is just a taste: https://reelrundown.com/movies/Top-Parallels-Between-Star-Wars-Episodes-1-and-4
Phantom Menace follows the ANH formula very closely. Trade Federation instead of Empire, but they're still threatening a planet. They still have a central ship/station that needs to be blown up by hitting the core. Both movies have a future super-powerful Jedi found on Tatooine.
There are even copied scenes:
R2 fixes the Queen's starship during a space battle.
R2 fixes Luke's X-Wing during a space battle.
Queen Amidala covers Anakin Skywalker with a blanket aboard the royal starship.
Princess Leia covers Luke Skywalker with a blanket aboard the Millennium Falcon.
And for those who can't stand a repeat of a Death Star like weapon (even though nukes have been THE big human weapon for close to a century!), the prequels are THREE movies in a row that are ALL about one superweapon: A controllable army.
Also, no one seems to care about the blasters, space ships and light sabers being repeated ad nauseum... No, they only care about something big and noticeable, like a planet-shaped weapon. Not even three movies about "controllable army" is noticed, because many people are simple-minded and only focus on things that are too obvious to miss. Subtlety is lost on them (which is why they also complain about movies being similar to other movies).
=)
The Prequels and the OT are similar stories and have character growth. Unlike TFA which had the hero defeat a sith in the first movie. I don't remember Anakin and Luke doing that. In fact Anakin and Luke both lost their FIRST light saber fight in the second movie.
TFA Plot
"An orphan on a sand planet escapes the empire oops I mean first order on the falcon oops I mean Millennium Falcon. Finds a droid R2D2 oops I mean BB-8 with top secret information. Fights off two tie fighters oops I mean first order tie fighters as they leave the planet. Princess Leia I mean Poe Dameron put the death star plans I mean map to Luke Skywalker into R2-D2 I mean BB-8 just minutes before he is captured by Darth Vader I mean Kylo Ren. Then later Princess Leia I mean Poe Dameron is rescued by someone in a Storm Trooper uniform. Meets up with the rebels oops I mean resistance then visits a cantina oops I mean cantina and learns about the force from yoda oops I mean Maz K. Then Luke oops I mean Rey watches her mentor be killed by Darth Vader oops I mean Kylo Ren. Then lets call her "Rey" helps destroy the death star oops I mean starkiller base by deactivating the shield generator so that x-wings oops I mean x-wings can make a trench run. "
Yeah, basically its a brand new story...
I think this is normal when it comes to the middle entry of a Star Wars trilogy. I wasn't alive or born yet when Empire Strikes Back came out so I don't really know what the excitement level and marketing was back then. But I do know when Attack Of The Clones came out, the marketing and excitement wasn't as huge as it was for The Phantom Menace. I remember when The Phantom Menace came out and Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut did some Monopoly like tie-in game plus have kids' toys to market the movie. Nothing like that for Attack Of The Clones. Plus it had been 10-15 years between Return Of The Jedi and The Phantom Menace and then 10 years between Revenge Of The Sith and The Force Awakens. So with fans waiting that long for a new Star Wars movie, I can see the marketing and excitement being huge and more than what it was for the next movie (Attack Of The Clones and The Last Jedi).
And Disney (20th Century Fox for The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones) is probably relying on The Force Awakens to do most of the marketing for The Last Jedi. I know I didn't really need trailers for The Last Jedi. I was going to see it anyway since I want to see where things go next with all the new characters introduced in The Force Awakens, especially with how things left off in The Force Awakens. But I remember not being as excited for Attack Of The Clones as I was for The Phantom Menace, although I liked The Phantom Menace (I was 9 or 10 when it came out though, so that explains a lot). I wasn't all too excited because of lack of marketing. There was no Monopoly like game for Attack Of The Clones at the restaurants as there was for The Phantom Menace and the toys and other merchandise for AOTC wasn't as blown up either. I notice the same thing when comparing the marketing for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Marketing and merchandise was EVERYWHERE for The Force Awakens but not as much for The Last Jedi. But I AM excited for The Last Jedi though. More than what I was for AOTC.
Bullsht. Huge excitement for Empire
shareThe News tab has been broken for weeks. I see stuff in my Google feed.
The LA premiere is Saturday, there will be tweets maybe reviews. Opens Wed somewhere.
Yeah...this is going to open substantially lower than The Force Awakens...maybe around Rogue One level. If it goes even lower than that then we know the wheels have come off this franchise.
shareYou realize you are hardly the poster child for knowing when the wheels have come off a franchise, right?
shareThe Mighty Cock of Conan has shrunk considerably in size these past months because he feels quite cold towards this movie.
There is a desperate need of action, death and manly violence in order to get the blood pumping enough to cause an erection when thinking about an upcoming movie.
Movies of today are sterile, they lack the irreverent virility and uncompromised exuberance of the youth's natural taste for blood, violence, sex and death.
Everything has to be nice, safe and inoffensive : PC-culture has made movies as boring and sterile as the old people who control the studios.
Sterility in movies doesn't match well with fertile manly genitalia, especially when it comes to the Mighty Cock of Conan : because it is made of STEEL.
I have noticed a lack of excitement from people around me. When TFA was coming people at work were talking about it and making plans to see it. Now most don’t even know when it’s coming out. I am sure it will still make massive amounts of money.
shareSadly, it took people 2 years to realize they were tricked by watching A New Hope remake. I think people are being a little more cautious now.
shareI'm sure the movie will do fine and people will go see it. I remember when Attack Of The Clones came out. There wasn't too much excitement as there was when The Phantom Menace came out. I remember Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut doing this Monopoly like game and having special kids' toys for The Phantom Menace. Nothing like that for Attack Of The Clones. I wasn't all too excited for Attack Of The Clones like I was for The Phantom Menace either. Mostly because the marketing wasn't as big for Attack Of The Clones as it was for The Phantom Menace. So I think we are seeing a repeat for The Last Jedi as to what there was for Attack Of The Clones. The Force Awakens and The Phantom Menace were the start of new trilogies so they needed to market the crap out of them. Plus The Phantom Menace and The Force Awakens were the first Star Wars movies in 10+ years since the last one. Attack Of The Clones and The Last Jedi are coming out 2-3 years later. So marketing and possibly excitement aren't as high for them as they were for Phantom Menace or The Force Awakens. Probably marketing figures that they got everyone hooked with the first movie in a new trilogy and the first movie was a good chunk of the marketing. I know I didn't really need trailers for The Last Jedi. The Force Awakens was a good enough trailer for me for The Last Jedi. I want to see where things go next for the characters.
