This may REALLY underperform

There seems to be no excitement for this. This is disasterous as there is still one more film not counting the spinoffs.

reply

It's still gonna make a lot of money. It may be like Blade Runner 2049, where it started slow but picked up as it went along. It made a lot of money, but not the gross they were expecting, up until the second or third week

reply

Blade runner 2049 flopped hardcore! It did NOT pick up as it went along...it plummeted 52% on its second weekend getting beat by happy death day. To say it made a lot of money is subjective as to the layman 65 million is a large sum...but if you have over 150 million invested...you better have some towels, because you just took a bath. Even with foreign markets...this flick will most likely not recoupe its production costs.

As for TLJ...150-200 million first weekend...as for the long haul...depends if it is as well received as TFA...if it's fuckin awsome...look out avatar...

reply

The expectations for box office are so high and yet so many people have been turned off by The Force Awakens.

The opening weekend may be below 150 million. Yes...I'm serious...there is a huge problem here.

Most studios would love to have a film underperform like Star Wars, people are sheep still seeing the same Marvel film over and over again

reply

"Most studios" didn't pay 4 BILLION dollars for whatever franchise they are pushing...lol.

reply

Star Wars makes billions in just merchandise alone yearly, Di$ney will be fine

reply

Merchandise sales have slowed to a crawl at best.

reply

People said the same thing about Disney's Cars 3...the movie flopped and the merch sat on the shelves while people bought Universal/Illumination's Despicable Me 3 merch.

reply

Sorry i don't think Episode 8 will see a bigger drop than IV to V or I to II. But middle chapters in Star Wars are the lowest grossers

reply

Target has been flooded with SW merch. I don't see it moving very fast yet.

Hollywood in a nutshell. They're falling, fast if not sooner. Only movies people come out in droves for is superhero Marvel/DC since they just pump 2-3 of them every year. Surprised people aren't bored of the drivel yet. The other movies are usually a span of 3-5 years in between. So yes, it MAY underperform domestically but oh boy they'll make up with international. They already sold out to the Chinese for cha-ching.

reply

China is only 25% take for the studio and Star Wars is not very popular there.

I'm predicting that this may be one of the biggest box office disappointments in recent history. This may struggle to make as much as Rogue 1 and there is still one more installment.

reply

Hmm, I thought it was 50%. I remember reading back then they get a small cut but if they allowed Chinese actors to star in small roles and/or get investment from Chinese film companies they'd get a higher % of the profits. I mean why else would they sell out like they do now? Look at Independence Day 2. Full of Chinese ad product placement galore.

They only allow 17 or so foreign films a year that's approved by the CCP as well.

reply

You underestimate the power of pre-sold family-friendly entertainment! Even horrific crap like "The Hobbit" can make billions, in a global village where everyone wants escapist entertainment and a way to shut the kiddies up for a couple of hours, and they'll give it a go if they remember the book from their childhood or good times at the "Lord of the Rings" movies.

And even if the hardcore fanboys are as determined to hate everything that comes from Disney, general audiences are not. They like Disney, they like Star Wars, they like action-adventure and spectacular effects, they like Rey and positiverolemodelsforgirls, they like popcorn and soda and fun, and if they aren't acting like a new Star Wars film is as important as a presidential election, that doesn't mean they won't go see it.

And the fact is, the mainstreamers who just want some fun and popcorn are a much more important audience than the argumentative fanboys. That's why Disney is trying to please.

reply

Well...we are just 11 days from opening.

Anyone else concerned this may possibly open well below 200 million domestic like Rogue One did?

reply

RO made about a billion while TLJ made 1.3, thats not very good in my book. Not to jump on the Queen bandwagon here, but you are always pretty correct about movies, its freaky deaky.

reply

Thank you, Bubbathegut!

reply

TFA was mediocre at best, BUT if TLJ can find it's OWN identity it should do well. I personally thought TFA was safe and boring. I LOVED Rogue One though.

reply

I loved Rogue One, too!

reply

below 1.5b was unexpected

reply

Indeed...now it looks like it will be below 1.4 billion.
