I was going off the assumption that he may have been evil. Turns out he wasn't.... So what was the point of all that?

I've already posted this somewhere else, but my own theory is that he might not have actually intended to kill her. He may have seen that she would kill herself, and went to visit her to stop it, but unconsciously caused her to hallucinate and kill herself. Of course, it could be that Victor is in fact evil but is trying to stop those urges in him, or that he is a fine balance of good and evil and does both things alternatively.
