I wish I could like Marc

...but I find him wholly irritating.

I see that the majority of respondents here on IMDB are fans.

I listened to his show on Air America, and even listened when he did the back office web series with Sam Seder. I have listened to hundreds of his podcasts. At the end of it, I just can't stand him and it annoys me that he has even a modicum of success. I can no longer listen to the majority of his podcast releases because of it. When Marc tells stories, I feel sorry for the 'other' people in the story rather than Marc.

So I guess it clouds my judgement when watching Maron. The show seems produced fairly well in the Louie/Curb Your Enthusiasm realm of shows, a little less dark than Louie and not as light hearted as Curb. But I would simply rather watch anyone else as the star than Marc.

I disagree. You say you feel sorry for the people around him. Don't you notice that he puts up with a ton of crap; annoying, rude people, people who use him, people who insult him and he barely responds. He might make a quick comment to some of them, but he doesn't argue with them, he takes their crap for the most part. Plus is very self effacing. To say you feel sorry for those around him seems very odd to me.

I disagree.

With what, exactly? You disagree with how I react to Marc?

Don't you notice that he puts up with a ton of crap; annoying, rude people, people who use him, people who insult him and he barely responds. He might make a quick comment to some of them, but he doesn't argue with them, he takes their crap for the most part.

I realise how Marc frames stories so he is the victim in the story, but I also know how Marc behaves when he is speaking to other people; he can be quick tempered, offensive, and selfish in how he deals with people he feels intimidated by. Like I said, I have listened to hundreds of his podcasts and months/years of his Air America shows, and story after story of people who have known Marc for many years suggest he can be a real prick, and come across very rude and dismissive of people. Maybe you simply enjoy his version of a story, but I have a fairly broad understanding of Marc's relationships from exposure to many hours of discussions.

To say you feel sorry for those around him seems very odd to me.

And how you describe Marc above seems odd to me.

Why exactly have you listened to so many of his podcasts, then? If you don't like him, why are you watching the show?

Everybody doesn't have to like everybody. And it's ok if other people do like him.

reply

Because I have an interest in Marc's associations, be they Louis CK, Sam Kinison, Sam Seder, and others in the field of comedy who have intimate or loose associations with Marc. And Marc has been very prolific as the first to collect a wide array of interviews from that group.

Anyway, I don't recall suggesting that other people should not like him. So if anything, maybe you should proclaim it's OK if I don't like him.

That was already folded up in the "everybody doesn't have to like everybody" part of my statement. It's ok that you don't like him, but there's this:

At the end of it, I just can't stand him and it annoys me that he has even a modicum of success.

Statements like that bother me, when people start deciding what other people 'deserve'. It also suggests that you *do* seem to resent that others like him because he wouldn't have his modicum (precisely what it is) of career success if others didn't. I can't stand Tosh but I don't sit around resenting his existence or thinking he shouldn't be allowed to earn a living in the biz. Maron has worked hard, not just in comedy but on himself over the years. He's earned what he has.

I understand venting, I've done it pretty much whenever Natalie Dormer shows up on a show I otherwise enjoy. But I don't go to Dormer-specific boards to trash her personally. Of course you're not going to like the show if you don't like Marc Maron. Thanks for sharing, I guess.

I kind of agree with you. He does have a whiner vibe to him. Listening to him kind of depresses me. I tried watching his show because a friend of mine said it was kInd of like Louie (which I love) but Maron is more like what Louie would be if Louis C.K. were given a handful of Ambien and told to make a show even though he was falling asleep.

That being said, it's not a terrible show but Marc Maron can't carry this show for the long haul because he's kind of a downer. They will need to lighten the show up a bit to kind of counteract some of Maron's blah sadness victim schtick.

I like Marc. He is a Sexy Downer.

I just watched a few episodes of this show for the first time. I've never heard of Marc Maron before, and I love Curb and Louie, so I was excited to see a similar show. I think Maron is unlikable, lacks charisma and has poor line delivery. The writing is decent but not on par with Curb and Louie. Combined with these qualities, Maron's negative, whiny persona brings this show down. Unfortunately I won't stay tuned.
