Really Good Build Up And Ending, Just One Issue (Spoilers)

I really enjoyed this film, the story worked well and the tension built up very well, the few twists at the end were perfect there was just one scene I felt that wasn't needed and was added on for shock value the ghost of the dead mother giving birth, other than that a good film - 7/10

We are the sons of no-one, bastards of young

reply

Exactly my thoughts. That birth scene was pointless.

reply

Manifestation of his guilt and utter devestation at killing both his wife AND unborn child. It works perfectly psychologically.

reply

Yes it does. But no so much cinematically. It felt out of place and pointless. Obviously added for the shock value, but it felt way different than rest of the film. Imho, that's why it was pointless in the first place.

By the way, who do you think the child was from? Somehow I thought it was from the wife's lover.

reply

It could have been either, they were still having cold, boring sex after all. We'll have to agree to disagree on this, personally I thought it was sort of the moment of catharsis showing his repressed fears in stark form. Yeah it was shocking, but I though it followed perfectly well from the narrative.

I wonder why people never complain about graphic violence, blood gushing out, brutal stabbings, mutilated bodies, etc, etc. Somehow they find it all necessary.

reply

Well...
There has to be a balance, cause there's a good amount of people constantly complaining about violence, sex and every other tabu they have in their life.
It's a movie. It used to be considered art (I still do) and I find explotation to be very similar to pop art in many ways.

More spoilers to answer your question.

The ghost in the stall tells him "the dark master wants her".
I assumed the birth was showing why. I assumed they wanted her baby and it was showing that.
Never thought of it as a guilt thing.
Hmm...

reply

Oops sorry for the bad editing and double "assume" sentences.

reply

That scene was absolutely necessary.
