The regular use of this phrase in regards to Rey, and then switching away before the answer could be heard, is something that led me to think there would be a bigger answer regarding her past.

Yep! I wouldn't have a problem with Rey's parents being nobody if it weren't for those moments. I'm fine with the idea that lots of people can be strong with the force and not be a Skywalker or a Kenobi. But it was quite clear that Han knew more than he led on. It's possible this could still be addressed in Episode IX (but I'm not holding my breath).
