Since when does La Cosa Nostra members wear full beards? He looks like friggin' Wolf Blitzer or somebody. Looks really lame. And why Andy Garcia in the first place? Major turn off for people who are craving for a solid, realistic mob movie. Hope I'm wrong, because the true story behind this is interesting.

So you found one pic of a guy in Springfield, Massachusetts who probably wasn't even a made member at the time of the photo (2002). No offense, but you seem like a novice when it comes to the mob. It's a fact that no NYC La Cosa Nostra members keep full beards like the silly beard that Andy Garcia has in this movie. It's not necessarily a "ban", it's the culture. The only time any member would grow a full beard like this is when they are on the run, and they want to disguise themselves.
I'm not trying to say that this movie won't be otherwise entertaining. It's just a turn off to people who want a realistic mob movie, which I would think is a major part of their target audience.

I agree. The beard was goofy. I don't necessarily mind Garcia in the role....I actually liked him as Luciano in Hoodlum, it's just the beard makes him look like my old ass neighbor who is a retired sewage plant operator, not a believable mobster.

I wasn't watching this expecting every aspect of mafia conduct to be followed to the letter, so the beard didn't bother me a great deal.
It might be argued that, in terms of the film's reality, until the existence of "the list" became known it was impossible for anyone to connect Big Al to any mob dealings and as a result he was free to dress and act in any manner he chose. Being top rung, who would've taken him to task over it?
Alternately, for the sake of the film overall, it's possible the beard was there to give his character a bit of relatability in contrast to Gotti's image that was all clean-cut bravado.
