First of all, I loved the first film, not the theatrical with the cliched tacked on ending that feels so blase, but the original director's cut with the cop ending to me is brutal and effective... then I pretty much hated all of the sequels, viscerally, abhorred them... so maybe my expectations have dropped so low that I ultimately find this movie far better than all the sequels, but I think I'm being fair when I say it's better than them.
Part of it is because it shows more in each scene, instead of giving nothing until the last few minutes which to me is a cop-out and ultimately a rip-off... a con job.
It shows more It has a more tolerable cast Better effects without overdoing it
Is it perfect, no. Is it great, no.
But it's definitely a step in the right direction after all those awful sequels.

But you kept going to see them, which doesn't make sense. How can someone love the first and hate the rest. These films are meant for the true fans. Why don't you leave them alone.

Simple. And I think many will relate. I'm a total horror junkie. Also I didn't go to see them, I work in the business and saw them at free screenings. But if I didn't, I wouldn't have paid to see them anyway. They're wishful thinking, you never know when you'll get the flash in the pan that surprises you. I abhor people who review movies they haven't seen, even worse.
This film was just a mess, none of the original Mythology was mentioned, no old characters returning except the younger counterparts of Katie and Kristi, no creative or original scares, just black CGI jumping at the screen, flat acting and boring cast with no extra dimension (pun not intended) except a happy family with no flaws or quirks like the other families as well as emotional tension that helps us connect with the characters more, granted none of the things they went through top the previous movies, but they still managed to keep their composure and emotions checked after what happened? cliché Antichrist plot elements that don't connect to the original Mythology of the first 3 or even 5 (counting The Marked Ones) and instead drives us away from the original premise of witches making a deal with a Demon for wealth and fortune in exchange for the first-born son, where did all this 'born under same moon' nonsense come from? Why wasn't Leila kidnapped after Hunter's kidnapping? where is the demonic army of possessed males? since when was Toby one of these 7 'princes' of Hell? where was Ali Rey? what happened to Alex Nelson? how is Toby human in 1992 when he's in demon form in 2006 haunting Kristi's family then transferred to Katie? How was Hunter taken to 1992? why was there no knowledge of Toby being one of the 7 'princes' of Hell and needing two born under the same moon in the previous movies? where the hell did they even find such knowledge? how did they know it was related to Toby? why didn't people in the family speak about seeing Toby at the pool or when the girl went in the daughter's bedroom and Toby appears behind her and clearly touches her to freak her out, yet a couple of nights ago where the mum saw the angel fall off the tree and thinks there's something in the house, yet the girl just acts like it was just a coincidence, SO many plot holes and paradoxes it is in NO way a true finale to the franchise.
I do not understand how you hated the others except THIS one, it was just a typical hollywood flick and will forever stand in the shadow of the first 3.
I guess after so many "Much ado about nothing" sequels of empty rooms, and a final 5 minutes of anti climactic BS, it was nice to see them actually show something for once.
Well, I understand that, but if it was antic climatic BS in your eyes before, it was climatic BS this time, just for shock value (wasn't even that shocking) and not related to the plot, and Toby's design was honestly lacklustre, before the Mythology was born I imagined him to be a tall abomination towering over humans and animals, with 3 toes (footprints in powder) and the head of a goat, with influence from Baphomet imagery like the book in the first one, something truly scary, you know? but all we got was just a black CGI mess, and there wasn't even any innovative gags like the pool cleaner in 2, teddy ruxpin or Bloody Mary in 3, kinect in 4, simon in TMO, and that's not even the worst part, no Katie Featherston the main star of the show which was the beginning of all the Mythology, no kitchen scares like the cabinets in the kitchen in 2, everything in the kitchen falling from the ceiling in 3, knife in 4, and last but not least, the time travel ending of TMO.
This was just Paranormal Activity going Hollywood, the delay didn't even help the film one bit, the script writers were on some 'hallucinogenic substances'... that time travel ending that made no sense and doesn't give us ANY answer whatsoever combined with the stupid decisions and paradoxical situations? No words, in the most negative way.
Ya, these movies are so bad, the bar couldn't really drop any lower, so that when they disappoint now, I'm not surprised. But this one at least fleshed out a story, yes, the ending and Toby was a return to POOR form, but a lot of the other stuff I did enjoy in the moment.
I guess there's no accounting for taste ;)
This franchise gets almost as far from Kubrick's Shining as is humanly possible.
Well, the franchise as a whole being bad in your eyes is a completely different story to this film.
To be very truthful this did not flesh out any form of storyline, it was just plot-holes and paradoxes topped together and at the ending it just falls apart like a stack of cards.
What other stuff did you exactly 'enjoy' in the moment?
flat acting and obnoxiously annoying family that made dumb decisions?
cringe-worthy movie title that forgets what the main Villain of the movie actually is?
CGI monsters?
CGI hands bursting out of chests?
Cliché Antichrist plot elements being inserted every second?
Cliché 'for dramatic effect' phrases being inserted every minute?
never ending plot-holes?
absence of a normal flow and pace that a Paranormal Activity film usually has?
Lack of dimension, originality and creativity in scares and plot?
absence of originally established plot points from previous films?
cliché happy family with no flaws or quirks and nothing to give them dimension or depth?
cliché gimmicky 3D FX which is something that doesn't belong in the found footage genre?
the fact that it won't be remembered like the other films?
the fact that the Animators and Producers inserted CGI to blind the audience from what a mess the actual plot is?
the fact that it had the most lowest box office ratings unlike the other films?
the fact that it didn't have a chance with the franchise's editor chosen as the director when only he would know of basic details and not what completes the films?
the fact that Katie Featherston was completely absent?
the absence of original characters that had a big role in the franchise and therefore NO excuse to leave them out?
the absence of answers to questions?
the time travel paradox ending that destroys what credibility the movie has left?
the fact that it was basically the '10 ways to not make a found footage film'?
And it's just crazy, it was only 2015, if it was written by the original writers who shaped the Mythology into what it is today, it would of HAD a chance and maybe just maybe, not contract the awful disease that seems to strike sequels of movies which is known as 'Sequelitis'
