Looking at the clothing it looks like the early 1980s

I believe its in the late 90's. I think 97, that's what I remember when I saw it. But it's based on a true event so you could easily google this.

looks very modern and timless (glad not set in the WTC era but down south0. Actually 1997.NOt a dated setting and could have happened today as I wrote.

Maybe kid nostalgia for the 90s before their time, with that Spice Girls public service ad there these TEEN girls are singing Wannabe..again, amazing how undated..the World Trade Center (that goodness, I live in the past anyway_ wsasn't blown down, yet our heroes are searched wkith a metal detector.

It said at the start of the movie that it takes place in 1997. Notice how they had pagers and not cell phones.

Obviously, it does not take place in the present.
It takes place in the 90s... that's the way it looks and they make it clear in the movie when it is intended to be.
