Hey, remember that bank heist you guys pulled? Can we make that story into a comedy film? Because you're so stupid there's no other genre it could possibly be.

The whole thing was comical in real life. Do you not remember this being in the news? All the stupid things these people did had been in the news quite a lot.

This was a very publicized story, it wasn't an unknown event.

I don't remember hearing anything about this in the news in 1997. I was only 13 at the time so maybe I missed it since I didn't watch the nightly national news.

It happened a month before I was born, so I wouldn't have known about it

Yeah, I'm sure they would have been generally wary about the way they would be portrayed and the possibility of ridicule. However, perhaps the main guy who was the security guard in reality felt there was humour in what happened to him and it wouldn't be an exploitative thing to use it as basis for a comedy plot.
