What Was With Kate McKinnon Character?

It felt like she was playing the role of a person who had a lobotomy. Not really funny, just odd.

As for the movie, it felt like one of those comedies you casually watch on comedy central for free. It's not bad, it's not good. It's just there. 5/10.

I believe she was playing the dumb hillbilly redneck type of character from the trailer parks of North Carolina.

I thought she was the funniest part of the movie, and wasn't given enough screen time. The engagement photos and the fight in the department store had me crying. As for the movie, 6 out of 10. I agree with most other sentiments, it wasn't bad and it wasn't great. I didn't waste my money seeing it, but I'm not buying it on DVD.

Was it me or did anyone get a hint of psycho from the way McKinnon played it but she did actually made me laugh in parts. I will go as far as to say that she was funnier in the litter screen time she had in this than her role in Ghostbusters.

Yes, she was definitely playing a psycho style character.

I think it was partially a mask the character was wearing to appear "reasonable" and "pleasant" and maybe "innocent" but in reality she was revelling in being able to manipulate and mock or oppress those around her, to appear to be top-dog regardless of the reality. She was pretty animated in the faceoff between her and Kristen's character so again the intent is not to appear lobotomised - she just takes great delight in being cruel to her husband, and using long silences is her favourite psychological ploy in her attempt to control him, eg. as if to say "Well, what you waiting for why don't try to impress me, though I doubt you're capable or worthy of my attention". She attempts to make every interaction awkward.

She always plays deranged characters and does very well at them. But why to overthink it? HAven´t you met weird people like that? She was just odd for the sake of oddity in a goofy comedy. It´s like trying to analyze Sudeikis carácter who was also a psycho.

I've only seen her in Ghostbusters and this, and she seem to specialize in weird characters that are meant to be funny but don't end up very funny (at least to me).

I did think Leslie Jones was really funny in this one though, and Kristen Wiig a notch up from GBusters for sure but not on MacGruber level but good enough.
