It wasn't really explained why him and his mother would move to the US when Trevor was much older then when his father left. His mother's job didn't seem special enough to disconnect him from his base and family. Plot holes like that bother me.
And yes, his father did speak in a very peculiar way.

If they were English just because the director wanted this actor then fine, but give us some excuse.
I read the book a few years back and I don't recall Trevor and his mother being English. I want to read the book again to do a compare and contrast with the film. There were already a lot of things they changed in the film compared to the book though.
