It doesn't matter if it's true or not. It matters that the character in the movie believes it's true.

Yes. that Irritated me when it was first said, but then they referenced it again 20 minutes later. Enough to make me think of this movie as written by someone who doesn't understand evolution,misread an article on the subject, or is making it up because they heard something like that.
I think that is a good representative of the quality of the writing in this movie though. It felt like a first draft of a script, a very superficial movie masquerading as clever.
So, you reject the theory that this was done on purpose, the monkey story represents what the character thinks, and not what the scientific truth is? I think it's plausible.
