"Franklin was a very minor character in the Peanuts strip (he made only about six appearances a year, on average), and he completely lacked a personality, rather like "5" and Roy."
Hey, I liked 5! Or 555 95472. His name was certainly unique and he sometimes was playing on their hapless baseball team. Roy introduced Charlie Brown to Peppermint Patty, so he had a big role in the strip too.
It was Shermy who had little personality, which was a pity as he was an original character, the guy who seemed to be a good friend and adviser to Charlie Brown. Then by the late 1970's or 1980's, he hardly appeared. He does appear in this movie, though.
Franklin was and is not really a major character, but it still was significant that a black character appeared in the strip in the 1960's and interacted well with the others, all white.
