Links to V/H/S??

I've now watched this and the first 'installment' over the past few days but haven't managed to figure out a point.

I was on the message board for the first movie and a few people seemed to mention that V/H/S 2 gave a bit more of an explanation as to what the tapes where all about. I've failed to notice this.

So basically, can anyone shed any light on what all these tapes mean? Also, are there any links between this movie and the original.

(and if anyone can tell me if V/H/S: Viral references these films in any way that would be even better)

Any sensible replies are greatly appreciated.

In V/H/S 2 the main story is called Tape 49, whereas the one from the first film is Tape 56, so V/H/S 2 is actually a prequel. The missing kid from the second movie has videos on his Mac of the first film's main story thieves, the videos they supposedly uploaded to the Web. It's implied that it was the kid who hired the guys to go to the old man's house in the first movie to steal a specific tape (he brags about his collection and how he wants to make a tape of his own). He also mentions how some dude in Little Armenia had a tape that was "the real deal" among his private collection of CP and snuff. There is also a portrait of the old man from the first movie above the kid's fireplace, which implies they knew each other. Lastly, Viral doesn't connect the films or expand he mythology. The only reference to the other movies are the images that the van is broadcasting onto people's cellphones, which are clips from the previous films, that's all.
