Was that really what I just saw? A zombie gets a call on his iPhone from his wife and grabs a shotgun and blows his head off... This is after he's gone on a killing spree which included a children's birthday party . WTF did zombie just grow a conscience after his kill spree... Lame ending to a decent short film
Zombies aren't just necessarily mindless shells. A lot of zombie media explores the extent to which a zombie retains pieces of its original self, and there are many different kinds of zombies. A zombie can be as if they have rabies or another disease, which drives them mad and forces them to lash out. When he got the call from his girlfriend it reminded him that he was human and he then [i]realized[/u] the horror of what he had done, the people he killed, and he couldn't live with that realization. The ending is specifically what makes this a great short.
Hell, in the last few years we've had plenty of examples of zombies regaining their humanity after going on killing sprees. Check out In The Flesh and even Warm Bodies. It's a more human and arguably realistic form of zombie mythology than ones that go from human to nothing in seconds flat, with no connection between the two.

that is some amazing zombie philosophy there....I think I'm more of the school of thought that once they die they are not only dead but brain dead other than the urge for the need to feed and there is nothing left of there former self.. However there are the "infected" types ala 28 Days Later who not real zombies but fall into the general category...not to much humanity in that lot either.. Now i will say the "infected" from the film "The Crazies" did actually maintain there humanity even if it was among other things murderous and twisted but there was something there, but like i said they are "infected" not real zombies who have died and reanimated. That is the difference "zombies" die and come back and "Infected" get sick and gradually turn without dying.. no death/no zombie.
I guess I prefer my zombies dead mindless rotting corpses..I guess I'm just old fashioned like that...
"Smart zombies" are a pretty controversial concept in the zombie genre and a lightning rod amongst zombie buffs. The basic idea is that zombies eventually evolve to learn and slowly become more human as time goes on. I think the first film to explore this was Day of the Dead (1985) where director John Romero introduced Bub who by the end of the film was able to recollect people and aim and fire a handgun. This was after a long period of "teaching" by a scientist trying to unlock that by introducing emotional elements to help him recall his past.
VHS2 sped this up quite a bit by having the Biker see things like his reflection and his girlfriend's voice making him recall his humanity strongly enough that he's able to commit the final act of suicide.
I got wordy there, but that's really the reasoning behind the Biker becoming smart even after he massacres a bunch of people.
For the love of God zombies are so damn lame. There's absolutely nothing scary about them and that stupid soap opera walking dead has completely ruined what made them semi-interesting. Vampires were ruined by all the metrosexual mtv crap, and now zombies are even more played out. It's like horror for people who can't handle horror.
mobstar1967 it gave us a different perspective on what being a zombie could be like. Maybe the human inside does not entirely get lost and we fight the infection and thus the guy had a moment of clarity when he heard his wife or whatever and realized he couldn't have that anymore and thus killed himself. Yes it is a different idea than The Walking Dead gives us but what is wrong with that? I thought the ending was awesome and thought provoking.
