For one thing, you don't kill the dog. I know it's not real, but it's just kind of an unwritten rule!
It would have been so cool if the alien walked up to the dog at the end AFTER it died. You see a flash of light. Then the dog gets up and runs away. The dog can never tell anyone what happened anyway!

shareI think that a stronger ending would have been the dog running away, a flash of the dog running in the daytime in a deserted area, and then a final flash of someone finding the dog and picking it up (thus finding the footage), the implication being that the aliens came, snatched/killed the children, and then vanished without the rest of the world even noticing. Thus they could presumably do the same again.
Now THAT would have been creepier.
Dogs always die in horror movies, save for a few. It makes me sad and puzzled, but then again maybe dogs get killed because they can sense the evil.
