Can They Track Where A Car Has Been?

Just watched the film last night and I was intrigued by the scene where Mills plugs a device into his wife's car and downloads his wife's driving history and from the GPS coordinates recorded in the car finds out about her last movements. Of course, her car was fitted with GPS navigation.

So does this mean all cars with GPS navigation are tracking and recording your movements whether you use the in car navigation or not?

And is it possible to find out the movements of any vehicle nowadays whether they're fitted with a GPS or not (similar to black box flight recorders)?

Or finding out this kind of tracking information will only work for cars with in car navigation systems?

Cheers to anyone who might be able to answer my queries...

Any device which knows its own location, such as by using GPS could easily record the location periodically. I'd hope that if a car had such a feature, it would be made clear to the operator and under the control of the operator. OTOH, I wouldn't be surprised if a car manufacturer weren't as upfront about it as they should be. I believe the car in question also had a built in cellular phone, so as long as that was turned on, the service provider would be able to track the approximated location regardless of what the car recorded itself.
