When Russia invaded Afghanistan?

Let's see. Oleg was in the Russian Army when they invaded Afghanistan thirty-six years ago (1979). The actor portraying Oleg (Sam Spruell) is 38. Therefore Oleg was two when he invaded Afghanistan.
I know, picky, picky, picky.

I was thinking the same thing.

Great minds, shadaif. Great minds. I do think Sam Spruell did a good portrayal.

Wasn't he Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber?

loki, You're joking. That was Jim Carrey.

reply

Hahahahaha

He's making a reference to his hair.

I laughed so hard I cried. Amazing. Also, yes the little backstory made zero sense, like the rest of the film.

I thought he was Ramon the Towel Guy from Seinfeld.

A character's age is not necessarily the same as that of the actor! Clearly, Sam Spruell is playing someone older than 38.

So yeah, he looks a bit young for the character. But there are plenty of worse examples of actor/character age disparity in movies, ones where you don't have to know the date of a war in order for it to jar.

Very true, Barbra Streisand in Hello Dolly, virtually the entire cast of Grease, the students in To Sir With Love, to name three. Not denying the OPs point but I thought there were plenty of other more obvious things in this movie to pick on.

When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!

It would have been more appropriate if they had said Russia's war with Chechnya in 2000.

reply

It was actually the Soviet Union that invaded Afghanistan, not Russia.

Yeah, because we all know the language of the Soviet Union was Kyrgyz, and Stalin just happened to use Russians in his process of Russification.

It wasn't Russia in the the same way it wasn't Turkey that was allied with Germany in WW1, it was the Ottoman Empire...come on.

reply

They don't call them Ruskies for nothin
