So, they build a time machine, and all they do his play pranks and party... I would think they would do something important at least

They each made enough money, like David who went to MIT (not cheap)
They were immature and David cared only about his Dad and Jess.
Simple really.

I think they intentionally did benign stuff so as to avoid causing a bigger ripple effect. No matter how altruistic of an action they could've done they didn't know what negative effect it could've had.
