Hand Held Butterfly Effect Rip-off

Agreed, I was really looking forward to this too. Butterfly was better also.

Why can't these two good time travel films peacefully coexist?

I wouldn't call it a rip-off but they were definitely similar, and yes Butterfly Effect was better.

I liked this movie and I didn't think it was a rip off at all

Wouldn't call it a rip-off, but I was surprised at the similarities. I think it's probably just because there are only so many ways you can tackle time travel that anything new will probably have similarities to something that has come before.

You discover time travel. You travel back in time. When you return, you discover the butterfly effect has caused things to change for the worse. You repeatedly try going back to fix things and they just get worse. Even The Simpsons had a Treehouse of Horrors episode which basically had this idea, which I think came out before The Butterfly Effect movie came out.

Personally I think Project Almanac and The Butterfly Effect are different enough that you can like both for different reasons. (I do hold The Butterfly Effect as one of my favourite movies, though.)

This concept of time travel is far older than the Butterfly Effect. Its a fairly standard and easily derived effect of the time travel concept.

People cry rip off far too easily.

i thought of that, but the flashback/time unwinding and girlfriend talking about changing the world had a real donnie darko feel to it.
