Why didn't he freaking save his dad???
I kept waiting for him to tell him not to go because of the car accident when they were in the basement and then NOTHING!
That was the whole point of him going back to 2004.

Also, when he went back to 2004 and was in the high school, it was a school day as all the kids were in the hallway YET he then went to his house and his birthday party was going on. School hours? Huh?

Yes, I thought he would save his dad too, or at least tell him not to leave the house for his birthday.
But I guess at that time in the film, David is aware of the "ripple effects" his actions in the past may have. That's why he only changes one thing (destroy the time machine), and lets his father die,
