I depends on their motive. Statistically most male serial killers do have sex as a motive, female killers can be sex as well but mostly money, although nurses are a high percentage of FSKs. The Zodiac is considered more of a thrill killer and targeted both genders. Berkowitz shot both genders as well. Yang Xinhai and Anatoly Onoprienko killed entire families. So not every killer needs to target one specific gender.
I don't remember the homoerotic tendencies as much. I think that he would have acted similar to whomever his victim was. He seemed to be more of an opportunistic killer who liked to play cat and mouse games with his victims and it wouldn't matter to him who answered the ad.
I didn't get that vibe at all. You can be enamored or obsessed with another person of the same sex without it being homoerotic. Not everything in this world is sexual.
