'OXV: The Manual' - resonates on many levels.

Saw 'OXV: The Manual' by Darren Paul Fisher at the Fantasia International Film Festival 2013 and found it a very original, intriguing, endearing, enlightening and unexpectedly surprising feature.

It was introduced as "nothing you've ever seen before" and indeed it was. It's the kind of film that will stay with you and leave you thinking... and guessing. It resonates on many levels. Be sure to add it to your list of 'must see'.

Here's a synopsis of the film from the Fantasia site: http://www.fantasiafestival.com/2013/en/films-schedule/271/oxv-the-man ual

And a review of the film in the Montreal Gazette blog: http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/2013/07/24/fantasia-film-festival-my- suggestion-buy-tickets-to-oxv-the-manual-right-now/

Just got back from it at the Calgary Film Festival.
I quite enjoyed it, it was like a 'gentler' and 'deeper' version (in some ways) of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Call it a science-romance perhaps?

The cold science of it, or the 'chemistry' of romance versus the pure emotion of love makes for very interesting subject matter. I found myself thinking about the theme of this movie, fate versus passion a lot during the film. Really makes you think, are we in control?, are we not?, does it matter?

It was also a very (And I mean very) gentle film, with not so much as a single swear word or act of violence. Very gentle, very sweet, yet still very 'scientific'.

Most of the movie was quite well cast, and there were some great deliveries, especially by the younger cast members. It was beautiful to look at, with lots of nice tight shots of faces/reactions, which really brought out the emotion of the piece. Lovely to look at.

Honestly though, I enjoyed the first 2 acts the most. The Third act got a little heavy handed and I found it bogged down the story a bit. Still, an enjoyable piece of cinema, and I'd give it a good solid 7.5

Oh yeah... a lot played around with in this film.

Fate vs Passion, as you said.

Free Will vs Determinism

Intellect vs Emotion

Mechanism vs Dualism

The power of Music

Science vs Magic/Spirituality

Epistemology in general

And more...

A lot packed into this little piece!

This was quite simply an amazing movie. I haven't been left speechless at the end of a film for a very long time, but this did that to me. Afterwards all I wanted was to be left alone with my thoughts. It created a small epiphany in me. I am so grateful for the profound effect that art can make in one's life!

Beautiful. Also I wanted to bump this post for the title alone. So glad all is not lost in our day and age.

Really well said! Such an interesting concept and so many things going on (a lot of which I never would have picked up on but for some nice posters on this board). Unique movies like this are just so rare, which is kind of sad when you think of the sheer number of films released around the world every year. I'm just glad I took the chance and watched it. Just wanted to show some appreciation of your nice post though!
