i loved that line. i was waiting for her to shout, "you are BLACK!" and i was chanting out loud, "don'tsayitdon'tsayitdon'tsayit" because there would be no going back from that. it would be evidence that, no matter how well the two girls got along, even Dido's sister-cousin-best-friend, underneath it all, saw her as a black girl instead of a girl who was black. the fact that the worst thing Bette could come up with in the heat of an argument was that Dido was illegitimate showed that Dido's colour didn't even register on Bette's radar.
to the original poster, i had the same fear when we met the two little girls, and was relieved as a viewer and happy for Dido that my fear was unfounded :)
