What a Beautiful Little Movie
I love period films in general so I had to see this film.
It was so sweet, I love how it was easy to sympathize with both 'sisters' neither one was a caricature, both were fully developed human beings. It showed how both Elizabeth and Dido were restricted by the society they lived in. Dido because of her race, and Elizabeth because she had no money. I felt for both of them throughout the course of the film, and I loved how the movie depicted their bond with each other. Even in anger the worst thing Elizabeth could fling at Dido was that she was 'illegitimate', showing Dido's race meant nothing to her. I thought the sisterly love depicted between them was very enduring.
I also love how Dido's family, especially her Uncle are all shown to love her but at the same time are all too aware of society and their places in it. There were no villains here, just people trying to do the right thing at a time when the right thing wasn't completely accepted.
And lastly the love story between Dido and John was very touching, I loved how they showed it as a true love match between equals. They get to know each other on equal terms and fall in love in the process. It was believable and realistic, and very sweet. John's passionate declaration of love to Dido's Uncle in the carriage is one of my favorite scenes in the film.
All in all I thought it was one of the best period films I've seen in recent years. I admittedly don't know much about the 'real Dido' so I don't know how accurate the film is from a historical perspective (I'm sure their were liberties taken, as films always take liberties with historical subjects) but as just a movie it was a very enjoyable experience.
