I prefer DIDO as the movie title

heaps of other movies have belle in the title and dido stands out more. ashame that it wasn't dido.

I'm going to have to agree with you.

I know Belle means 'beauty' and all....but still. This movie should be way more popular, especially for people who love period drama. And yet when I mention it to people....it doesn't ring a bell. Pun intended lol.

Maybe they can repackage it as "Dido" or something. It still isn't available on DVD in my country.

thank you! she was called dido throughout the movie and then they give the movie such a boring name that doesn't stand out. pr and marketing wise dido was the way to go.

Agreed. Dido isnmore unique and stands out like she did. Belle doesn't do the movie justice.

What's really confusing:

Dido Elizabeth Bell - ok, she is the belle of the title, its a game of words, understood. So far I can follow and its ok.

But here Cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray is called with the nickname Beth. But why?

"la belle et la bête" (the Beauty and the Beast) - everybody knows this.
But nothing about Beth was ugly, they were friends and soulmates from the beginning.

It's based on a true story therefore those were their real names. Beth is a popular nickname for Elizabeth especially in those days. "La Belle et la Bête" is an interesting coincidence.

I have never been able to remember the title of this movie. It deserved a more unique and catchier title.

sure - but belle as poetic version for Bell was a decision and not the true story, so who knows if it was just a coincidence. But the way it is, yeah, Belle is a bit random as title.

Her name is likely Belle. There is a misspelling on her Baptism paper, but that would be outweighed by other official documents written as Belle. I see many misspellings on my family's documents, too. I don't know why people never corrected them at the time.
