While I won't tell you to 'get over yourself' I do empathize with your feelings, and your concerns are valid. I was just as timid about revisiting the pain conjured up watching a film where slavery is an issue and human beings are degraded and mistreated unfairly and cruelly. Because I like all the same qualities that you said you liked, you will not be disappointed.
There are painful scenes, however, there are just as many triumphant and beautiful ones, or more. There are more redeeming qualities in this film than not...in that it is a refreshing change than what we all may have expected. No one gets whipped or seriously physically hurt or degraded. The discrimination is mostly subtle and fiercely protested throughout. The emotional scenes will soften you, not anger you, but they will make you feel. It is extremely well played by the actors and tastefully done by the director and writer.
Making the audience 'feel' is the objective of every director, so in that the film was successful.
