poking Justine
so that scene was to determine who was virgin ?
and when that tribe queen "ruined her", why was she then picked
to be "chosen" ?
and what the hell was she up to then
to be breeding with others or to be sacreficed ?

i was wondering that too. if she was a virgin why do the mutilation?
shareOstensibly, the village elder was indeed going to maim her genitals before she got distracted. This makes sense considering all the FGM stuff at the beginning of the movie, particularly the professor’s line about it not being specific to Africa—she specifically included “tribes of the Amazon”. When Kaycee asked why they do it, the professor said they believe it is a rite of passage that turns a girl into a woman.
Obviously there are multiple reasons that FGM is done, but since everything else in the movie served a specific purpose, it is not unreasonable to assume that Eli included that line as an explanation of why things where happening as they did later. In other words, they were going to maim her in order to turn her into a woman for some reason.
It’s not clear what their ultimate plans were for Justine, but the village elder said “a gift from the gods” after she examined Justine, so it is unlikely that they wanted to sacrifice her (you kill people to give them to the gods, sacrificing someone sent from the gods would be returning-to-sender, and quite an insult).
Therefore, the only reasonable conclusion is that they intended to use her for breeding purposes.
(It’s not clear what they did to her while she was unconscious, but it was obviously not the mutilation.)

The purpose of female circumcision is to take away the woman's ability to feel pleasure during sex, because a lot of cultures believe women shouldn't enjoy intercourse. They probably believe that procreation is the only reason for sed and that the woman's job is to have children, but not enjoy the act of conception. The other girls clearly weren't virgins and already knew the pleasure of sex. Since Justine was a virgin, she would be the ideal candidate for this procedure in their eyes because she's never experienced sex, and thus, never felt the pleasure. She hasn't been "ruined" yet. They probably intended to use her to produce more children for their tribe. The other girls they were just going to eat.
sharethank u both for the detailed explanations, it makes sense now

What if....she had funky genitals and the other girls had the everything tucked nicely away inside look? That wouldn't explain why the virgin then but I was thinking they weren't going to kill her just mutilate her and in line with the foreshadowing "make her a woman" the non virgins were already "made women" thus no need to mutilate them.
In line with that I don't think they were planning on killing any of the women because they could have used them for breeding. It's plausible I'm giving more credit to the story than what we received.
I don't get the whole breeding thing that a lot of these westerners injected into native cultures thing want to perpetuate.
The villagers aren't that ignorant to the world as they have been fighting the bulldozing companies and mercenaries. They also knew these kids were foreigners and not some Gods. They hacked one up and ate him and ate the other female too for escaping and a 3rd female who committed suicide.
So all of a sudden, one foreigner woman is a virgin with a dubious poke test and she is all of a sudden worthy to be saved and used to breed? The villagers didn't look like they were short of their own women to breed with and keep their stock pure, free of the taint of the outsiders who seek to destroy their way of life.
