If they were trying to escape unnoticed. It's the opposite of camouflage.

I thought that seemed dumb too, but maybe to protect from insect bites? Or more likely, if they were found by militia they wouldn't get shot at.

Exactly even though most survivor movies always show them coating themselves in mud to stay hidden and they were just like, "Naw... They won't see us."
