What was Alejandro's problem?

I mean seriously...what was up with him? Why was he so sketchy and devious? I just didn't understand his motives. Was he simply using political activism as a source of fame or praise? And plus, why was he so mean and cold about everything? I can't even believe that anyone would agree to go along with his plans. From my point of view, he was unbelievably sketchy, untrustworthy, and just downright unfriendly...that I wouldn't want to have anything to do with him. Why would anyone trust him? And plus, when he was actually captured by the cannibals, he didn't seem worried or even slightly nervous about anything. Every time someone mentioned an escape plan, he would automatically shoot it down with pessimism. Did he not understand that he was about to be killed? He seemed awfully content with the possibility of death.

Thoughts???

He was supposed to be a parody of an activist.
