I should know this by now but I need help with something

I've passively watched this show on and off and one thing he said in last weeks episode is he's learning how much of a bad person Dmitry was. I know he's taken on many personas over time but what I guess I've failed to understand is why does he not remember them? How does he not remember what he did as Dmitry?

He was injured in 2004 in Iraq and as a result he lost his memory. He was working for MI6 at the time, undercover with an American private military contractor when he suffered a head injury and lost his memory. Someone wanted to protect him, and they created the Martin Odum legend to make him disappear, with his "wife" being an agent looking after him.
