the film's climax was incredibly weak.

I enjoyed it,I just wish it had a stronger climax...it's extremely weak and the film just kind of fizzles out from there, it needed a big climax like GONE GIRL had.

Gone Girl had a big climax? I thought the movie was pretentious and not clever like people said.

I have yet to see Dark Places though.

Well, maybe not a specific climax, but GONE GIRL had several ups and downs at the end that could be considered climaxes ( SPOILERS ) like the killing of Desi Collins, the pregnancy test, etc.

Gone Girl has it's revelation then it just sort of fizzles out, I never once felt Libby was in any real danger.

It started out great, I liked the team of people solving/reacting crimes and mysteries. Then the second half turned into some Lifetime movie with an out of left-field murder twist that didn't need to be in the movie. To be honest I thought Lyle was the lovechild of Ben trying to free his killer father. Now that's a TWIST. 5/10

Look at the night sky, where does it end?

Seems to be a pattern with her stories, as i felt the same way with Gone Girl.

I agree with the poster that has said the second half was weak.I found it very unbelievable that the mother would hire a killer, first of all. Then to have Ben and Diondra in the house at the same time as he is, and for Diondra to kill Michelle - just way too much nonsense going on. Also for the ending to have been wrapped up so neatly didn't make much sense to me. Just like that they take Libby's word that Diondra was the killer of Michelle and that someone else killed her mother and sister? After her lying about her brother being the killer? That Ben would stay in jail for 28 years to protect a daughter he didn't know? It was just one implausibility too many, in my opinion.
How did he know she was even alive? Was there something I missed?

Patty didn't know her son would come back that night. That's why Ben ruined the whole plan of his mum (for letting Diondra be in the house). The reason why Ben stayed in jail for 28 years wasn't just for his daughter. He felt guilty for what happened with his family. That was kinda self-punishment.

About Libby and Diondra, u can guess that when the hired killer got arrested, he would tell the police that he only killed the mom and one daughter. Since Diondra tried to kill Libby in present day and got involved in that night. The police would easily investigate her and her daughter to find out the truth.

I agree, the film itself is pretty decent, feels and looks good, has potential.
But the story just doesn't quite know what it wants to be.
Too desperate to try and fool the viewer, to be original, shocking, etc.
I like the idea of the serial killer who thinks he is helping people, as far fetched as it may be but to have the son be at the home with his weird girlfriend, the satanic nonsense, the indian friend, its just too much.

Should have kept it simple.
Serial killer murders family, son gets blamed.
