I don't understand how the killer knew where the money was, or even why he took it. I assume the best explanation is that they arranged it so it would look like a robbery, but how would that even make sense if no one knew it was there in the first place?

Patty did not pay to have her daughter killed. Debby walked in during pattys murder. The killer killed Debby because she saw his face. I agree that Diondra killing Michelle at the same time was far fetched.

exactly two murders happening at the same time was far fetched and just silly. I was so disappointed when i read the book.

The killing of the sister by Diadra was to justify why Ben never filed for an appeal. To protect her cuz he was madly in love with her. Also, Diadra was supposed to be high while doing it.
But that was precisely why it made little sense for Ben to confess to the murders. He knew that Diondra did not kill his mother and shoot Debbie, and so there was no reason why he confessed to these two murders too. If the police eventually caught that psycho, they would probably blame Michelle's murder on him too.

The part I don't quite get from the film (I haven't read the book) was why Libby told the court she actually "saw" Ben did the murders. Was she truly confused, or was she certain that Ben actually did it and so lied to the court even though she did not witness what happened?
The whole murder didn't make any sense. Ok paid killer got it. Mother also paid for daughter's murder too? Chloe Moretz's character killing a sister also...at the same time?..really unlikely stupid story.
That's how she paid the hitman. And everyone suspected she had money. They repeated it throughout the movie. An investigation shows an empty cigar box on the shelf and they might draw a conclusion. We also don't know what else he might have taken if not interrupted by the doomed little girl.
