Lyle (spoilers)

Did anyone else think Lyle was going to be revealed as Diondra/Ben's son? This goes for both the movie and the book. I so thought that he was secretly the love child grown up that I was almost waiting for it to happen, and then nope, he's just a doof. The book especially makes you think this with the allusions to his early-20's age, why he's so interested in the case but never says why, etc. When he invited Libby to his birthday party with his mom (with a woman talking in the background) I thought this was it, she would show up and his mother would be Diondra, having lured Baby Day there to finish the job she started. He even had a great motive, he ingratiated himself into her life to find out what she knew so they could be sure his mother was under no suspicion. Disappointed it didn't go that way, I felt it really would have packed a punch and was sitting there as a good plot twist. Wouldn't have been hard to put him in Crystal's role, but oh well.

I totally thought Lyle was going to be revealed as Ben's son when I read the book. I'm kinda glad it didn't go down that way, because it would have been too predictable if he was Ben's kid.

I liked Lyle in the book. His character was underused in the movie. Definitely an interesting guess though. But it would have made this insane story a little too insane.

I actually never thought that once but it's a very interesting thought.

I still really wish they had gone down this path, or at least that Gillian Flynn had thought of this. Would have made it much more interesting. I was so sure the hint when he tells her his exact age and that he caused the California forrest fires (in the book) was a red herring as we geared up for the finale.

I, too, thought that Lyle might be the son of Ben and Diondra while watching the movie. That would at least provide a motive for his tremendous effort to try to prove Ben's innocence. Lyle paid over a thousand dollars to Libby in total not to mention the time he spent. Did he have a day job? But then the same would apply to the other members of the Club and Ben was not the only one they were interested. So I guess the Club was just the film's device to get the story started and going.

Still, I think it would be better if Lyle was revealed to have a real connection to the case, rather than showing some girl that the viewers have never seen before at the end and she suddenly turned murderous.

Yeah, I thought this when they were in the car and Charlize was asking him why it means so much to them.. etc. Thought I figured it out there, but guess I was wrong. lol
