lie about Ben?
shareIt's common for investigators to coax a testimony out of young witnesses. They wanted Ben to be guilty because that was the easiest explanation of the crime. And during that time, even though it was a fictional book, the Satanist hysteria was real. A lot of crimes were put into that category.

shareIt was part of the "false memory" phenomenon of the 80s. She had just gone through a traumatic even and based on the line of questioning from the police her mind filled in the blanks.
That was also a huge problem in the young Ben's storyline with all the preteen girls. Their parents and even the psychologist (or whoever that guy was) asked them leading questions that planted ideas.
