Can someone explain this movie?

I read the book but didn't finish it so I watched this movie. The movie is so bad and poorly directed it was confusing, and the book is not this confusing, but I thought it was boring and I couldn't get into it. So, my question is the killer. Was the killer hired by the mother to kill the whole family or just her for insurance money? I cant figure that out. It just is one mess of a movie that I couldn't tell what was going on. Ben's girlfriend strangling his sister while guns shots are going off, and the mother getting stabbed! lol Just so crazy! Can someone explain what I was watching?

She hired him to just kill her for the insurance money. The one daughter walked in and saw him so he killed her with the ax to protect himself.

Insurance money. Diondra strangled Ben's sister simply because she was mad at her and Ben's other sister got shot because she saw the hitman.

The killer was only supposed to kill the mom. She put money for him in the box near the fire place. He was supposed to make it look like a botched home invasion with a single stab wound that would kill her quickly and painlessly.

He doesn't kill more than he is contracted to and he doesn't like killing children but he killed the sister when she went running out of her room because Diondra was choking the other sister.

At the end of the book they talk about how he feels that the only murder he committed was the one sister and she was basically collateral damage so he could keep on with his "good works".

Wow. So glad I didnt finish the book because this was a horrible story. She could have made a suicide look like an accident miles away from home. Again, this was a bad movie and book.

I thought the book was really good. The characters were so well written, even if the plot was unbelievable.

Anyway, in the book, the mother is described over and over as a person who feels she can't ever do anything right. She doesn't have it in her to kill herself because she would probably just screw it up.
