Where did the "NYC was a character" line originate?

I liked the joke about "NYC was a character in this story", but I am trying to figure out where it originated. During the previews for "Mulaney", he made a joke about how the statement was made about "Sex and the City". Also, I definitely got that vibe when watching "You've Got Mail", a film on which this film drew from heavily. It seems like something Woody Allen may have started. Was it because a lot of these NYC shows and films are actually filmed elsewhere, usually LA?

Sex & the City constantly, annoyingly, referred to Manhattan as a character on the show which was as important and the girls, so that was what I took away from it while watching this film.

You better understand I'm in love with myself Myself My beautiful self

I think it was meant to poke fun at all the Woody Allen films set in NYC, since it is always a woven into the story.

Yeah, the planets really aligned for this one. Now,move uranus;the mercury's rising.

"New York is a character itself in this movie. What kind of character, I'm not all that sure." -- producer Charles Gordon promoting The Super in 1991.

I feel like it's generally used for any TV show or movie which takes place in NYC and also uses it as one of the main points in the show/movie. Sex and the City is a prime example, Woody Allen films also work.
