Match up parody scenes with original movies.

SPOILERS, if you can't tell that from the title of the thread.

Obviously, the overall theme of the big company guy running the girl and her small cute store out of business is from You've Got Mail. Also the whole idea that Manhattan is part of the story can be from You've Got Mail, but also When Harry Met Sally, Serendipity, and many others.

The couple telling their story over dinner throughout the entire movie may be from multiple romcoms, but the primary one that comes to mind is Forget Paris with Billy Crystal and Debra Winger.

The second meeting in the bookstore was just like When Harry Met Sally.

A review said that one of the "tasteless" scenes in this movie was from Crossing Delancey, which I've never seen. What about the whole superhero costume scene? Anything there? Made no sense, otherwise.

"I'll have what she's having" was a line from When Harry Met Sally.

The idea that the female lead almost marries the wrong guy reminds of some Jennifer Lopez movie (The Wedding Planner?) where she agrees to marry some dope her father likes. It made zero sense in that movie, so in this movie when Amy Poehler is asked why she got engaged to someone who wasn't right for her, Amy says, "it was just a mistake, let's move on."

The sister at home and the kid were straight out of Jerry Maguire. Also the woman in the conference room who agreed to quit and leave with Joel.

Two people getting fixed up who have an unfortunate first impression from an accidental prior meeting is from ????? Can't remember.

Whatcha got?

I got nothing, but I know what you got: way too much time on your hands.

You also forgot Along Came Polly during the basketball scene, which is pretty damn similar to the scene with Ben Stiller playing basketball with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and they're talking about relationships.

There was also a lot more from "When Harry Met Sally." Such as the way she ordered food saying things like "If I can't have this, then I'll take this." Also the Charades scene was from that movie, especially when her current boyfriend told her "she was great at the game." Another thing taken was at the end when he told her all the things he loved about her.

And, how NYC is the third character in their romance is very Sex in the City.

I don't think you have too much time on your hands. As I was watching the movie I was ticking off the original rom-coms in my head.

The costume party was like that one Jim Carrey movie where he can't say no. Him and his gf go to a Harry Potter costume party. Lots of rom coms begin at those type of parties. Maybe not COSTUME parties, but some kind of party.

I thought the genius of this movie is that each scene wasn't a one-to-one match with another specific romcom, but rather ALL romcoms.

I laughed when they came home and made out, knocking over everything. That's pretty much in EVERY rom com.

I just wished they threw in more off the wall humor, like Amy dressed up as a knight, or Aunt Flo, or Fing mom, or the boss crapping his costume. lol...so random, but so funny.

The big sister's first scene looked like the 27 Dresses scene where Katherine Heigl's waiting for her sister to return home from the club. Ironically, the sister's name is Katherine and she did resemble Heigl in that particular scene.

The friend giving her the costume seemed like A Cinderella Story.

When Amy came out in the knights armour she looked like Brianne of Tarth from Game of Thrones obviously not a romcom, rather an observation.

The bad first impression could be anything from Pride and Prejudice to Life as We Know It.

I don't think it parodies particular movies, I just think the genre is built about archetypical scenes and you could take a dozen romcoms, cut each individual movie into nine numbered pieces and mix and match scenes in numerical order from random movies and have yourself a perfectly understandable story as a result.

Wasnt the long overly-complicated order at the coffee shop also like WHMS?

reply

I thought the coming home to big sister and a kid scene was definitely straight out of Jerry Maguire, to be honest. Especially the part w/the date interacting so much with the kid.
