an average movie
7/10
shareI'd rate it the same. I don't understand the accolades; I felt detached from the film and the characters while watching it due to nearly every single scene being so short and a lot of the movie feeling like a summary of something. It was almost like a PowerPoint presentation of the book. There being as much voiceover narration as dialogue kept me from ever getting very invested. The only great scenes were two with Ronsel and Jamie.
shareThe voiceover narration was a bit overdone...
I'm not entirely against narration and I do think it can be done well in movies, but it seemed a bit overused in this... Switching the narrators and such... it seemed as if every other scene was prefaced by narration, usually to give background on the characters as there are quite a few of them... It did disrupt the rhythm of the movie a bit... In a way, it made the film more distent and detached an experience, as I didn't fall into it as easily... I don't think this is what the director intended, but it was how I experienced this...
Overall, an ok movie... There are some other minor niggles, but nothing so flawed as to take me away from the experience...
Yeah nothing spectacular at all. not bad but certainly not great.
6/10
I fully agree. I wouldn't be so kind so 6/10 is what I consider. No character development, most the roles were quite flat. The actors were great, but the movie lacked something. And the ending...I did not like it. The guy was almost killed by KuKlu-slum, but he managed to reach Germany. Also, he obviously didn't speak German, so how did he establish such a good relationship with a German girl, during war. Afterwards, no tongue, no words, easy
shareI disagree. I was engrossed from beginning to end, despite the long length and the multiple points of view, which drove home the point of the movie.
