Tony Stark "I don't trust a guy without a dark side"

Remember that scene with Tony and Cap :

Tony Stark: Thor didn't say where he was going for answers?
Steve Rogers: Sometimes my teammates don't tell me things. Kind of hoping Thor would be the exception.
Tony Stark: Yeah, give him time. We don't know what the Maximoff kid showed him.
Steve Rogers: Earth's mightiest heroes... pulled us apart like cotton candy.
Tony Stark: Seems like you walked away alright.
Steve Rogers: [stares at Tony] Is that a problem?
Tony Stark: I don't trust a guy without a dark side. Call me old fashioned.
Steve Rogers: Well let's just say you haven't seen it yet.

Shouldn't it be "I don't trust a guy with a dark side" ?

All I can think of is that it's part of the "everybody has dirty laundry" mentality of billionaires. (mere peasants like me wouldn't understand.)

Any thoughts ?

Maybe Tony's mentality is anyone who is too "good" or too "normal" is considered inhuman. Like that old saying, "if it's too good to be true it probably is."

They arrived at Barton's farm, and the first thing on his mind was the wife and kids were undercover SHIELD agents.

Pretty much what you said.

In Tony's mind (and my own actually), everyone's got a dark side to them, some aspect of their character that is unpleasant to behold. So they usually keep it hidden. He thinks Steve is too perfect, that he's hiding something from everyone else, and that makes him distrustful.

To quote Rupert Thorne in Batman TAS: 'Everybody's got a dark side. The brighter the picture, the darker the negative.' Harvey Dent seemed too good to be true for most people who saw him, but we know how that ended up.

After watching CACW, it's interesting to watch this scene again. Gives one goosebumps.

Steve has a sincere belief in the good of people. Even if someone has done him wrong, Steve would give that person another chance to prove their goodness, unless they've proved themselves irredeemable.

I'd say, for Tony, it's the opposite. He has the sincere belief that eventually everyone's going to screw you. Therefore, in his eyes, everyone has a bad side, and the sooner he knows it, the better he can deal with you.

Maybe it's realistic, but it's a horrible outlook on life.

I like Steve's better.

Perfectly stated.

Tony seems to always be operating under the "What's this person's angle" mentality.

I wonder if he was always like that, or if it's a result of Obadiah Stane's betrayal.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

I wondered that too. But those three months in that cave changed him I'm sure, especially when he found out Stane was the initiator of that experience. A man he trusted explicitly. A man who wanted him dead.

But also, growing up super rich where everyone wants something from you, probably makes you jaded.

Yeah. Never had that problem ;)

reply

When he says "I don't trust a guy without a dark side" what he's essentially saying is "Everyone has a dark side and I don't trust people if I don't know what theirs is or who pretend they don't have one."

Remember he's also sort of bitter/envious of Cap. Part of Stark wants to be Cap, part of him resents him because his dad idolized him.

Tony's complex.

Tony can trust people with dark sides if he feels he knows what their dark side is and therefore can maneuver around it.

Reading my signature constitutes admission that I am correct. (Too late)

Great post guys. Awesome answers :)

I havent seen this movie yet, but everyone has a darkside to them, nobody is perfect. if someone seems too perfect they are hiding something, or are a ticking time bomb and dont know it themselves
