Great Quote: 'DC is for kids then you graduate to Marvel'

There's no question that Marvel has more depth and complexity and it translates to the big screen as well as in the books.

To quote the History Channel Documentary Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked from a few years back, "When you're a kid you read DC. Then, as you get older with more adult sensibilities, you graduate to Marvel."

It's been true for years and the current efforts on both the small and big screens just cement this fact. DC is so desperate to be taken seriously that they've tried to turn all their characters dark and brooding.

They stray from their source material because they know their foundation is silly and the history is shallow. Yet, what they fail to realize is that they are treading middle ground and coming off as even more ridiculous. When something is idiotic but tries to be dark and serious, what results is a mess. You then grant Hollywood types the freedom to inject whatever they think works.

This even happened to Marvel characters when Fox and Sony thought they knew better. Things like Elektra and Ghost Rider among others means that Hollywood "knowing better" can screw up even characters with depth. Imagine what is going to happen when you take every DC character who isn't Batman. What DC has (for the most part) are remarkably shallow, juvenile characters and the WB is asking some Hollywood hacks to make them believable and respectable. Good luck with that concept.

You simply can't make chicken soup out of chicken sh_t even if the one "ingredient" they will try and save every "recipe" with is Batman.

Thank God Marvel has a better foundation and more complex characters. They can stay true to their characters and not be afraid to deliver complete multiple note films. Humor can balance with drama and angst and action... imagine that!

NobodyEpic...and nothing epic (or relevant) to say either. The OP's post is very well thought through and it makes total sense. It's also true, and the plain and simple fact is that you and every DC fan in the world can't accept the fact.

reply

DC isn't for kids. DC is the more fantasy oriented of the 2 companies. The one thing they have to do is trust their characters and try not to ground them. They need to try not to take all that fantasy out and make it "real." I feel the same way about DC as I do with X-men. These movies should feel like they can go anywhere. When they do, you are there with them and not dislike it because they start going against the rules they established.

Thank you for defining exactly everything I absolutely despise about the X-Men. They're a bunch of whiny babies. And I've been a Marvel fan since 1964. The X-Men pretty much ruined Marvel by the end of the 1970's, though there are occasional good stories from the Marvel Universe since then. Just not very many, unfortunately.

and thank you for reminding me why xmen is not for kids. it is only kids that can handle social and political issue in a realistic extent.

Winter Soldier did it better than all 7 X-men movies.

so prove again why marvel films are for kids. kids down want social/ human rights subjects like racism, spirituality

When did any of the X-men movies have anything on spirituality? Avengers had an exchange about religion.

or the holocaust kids wants EXPLOSIONS AND MCU FILMS GIVES THEM THAT.

mavrel fans hates xmen because xmen dare address issues of racism and holocaust real events that devastated the world and damaged a lot of people who today have never recovered from it. that is not for the faint of hearts aka kids.

X-men has nothing but the Holocaust. They have so little that they had to remake the exact same scene again. Why? I'm sure there are other tragedies in history. Wait... I remember there was a time in history that had thousands of slaves building structures. Slaves that died making them. Days of Future Past took that tragic time in history away by having a blue guy holding his hands up and build them all. Yeah... X-men, huh?

EPIC FAIL. The legacy virriius whch was meant to represent aids, the civil rights and the complex relationship of Xavier and erik which was a miiror that of mlk and malcom x.

It's not that complex, Magneto never grows or changes or learns. He just stays the same jerk.

And considering other MCU characters have been through just as much as him but not allowed it to corrupt them the way he did, just shows that in many ways he is weak.

BWHAHAHAHAHAH winter soilder wad predictable for beginning to the end.

DOFP was much more predictable, because it was the same story Singer's been telling for the last 15 years.

winter soilder did not have any character development not one

Steve, Natasha, Falcon, even Fury. Compared to how DOFP was dedicated to making sure nothing changed AT ALL.

Nightcrawler gave us the spiritual and religious side of the xmen series.

All he gets in the movies is that one scene in X2. The MCU handles it much better because it doesn't discard everything else about a character just to focus on their religious beliefs.

What has an avengers done in terms if embracing spirituality one of the most popular themes in the human world

Plenty.

Nightcrawler in xmen 2 was all about religon/spirtuality they even found him in church.

They threw out everything else about his character to focus solely on that. That's lousy writing.

GOTG was the best film if you like fun, thoughtful, intelligent and non-pretentious.

Fixed.

kids down want social/ human rights subjects like racism, spirituality or the holocaust
You learn about social issues, human rights. racism, holocaust after you turned adult? I don't know, kids are very fascinated with the whole Civil Rights Movement at 4th grade.

My then 9 year old daughter accidentally stumbled upon Sarah's Key on Netflix, watched it, and then told me to watch it because it was a good movie, after. Whether that movie was good or not is beside the point, the setting is set during the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup. And my then 11 year old son accidentally stumbled upon King's Speech ( he didn't know everyone else was loving it ), and kept telling me to watch it because it's a good movie and he knows I like movies.

Let's even backtrack. When you were a 12 year old kid ( assuming you're not one right now ). And someone showed you Blade Runner, you think you won't be able to like it? Really?

I tend to think kids like to over think social issues, and adults tend to ignore them because we know it's very hard to change what others think and even harder to change the world. Talk to an adult about racism, see if he gives a crap. Now, talk to a kid about it, and the kid would be all hot tempered saying, "How can people treat other people that way just because they are different?" Wasn't that how you were when you were young? All the progressive movements, who do you see? Kids. Adults just want to lay down and sleep and forget about their stress.

^THIS! So much THIS!^

If DC stopped trying to make everything so dark & gritty, and instead let the quality and humor of the source material shine through more often, then they might be doing a little better with their latest movie efforts... Maybe.

reply

Agreed. I think they ran into that problem a lot with Man of Steel. They tried to turn Superman's story into Batman's story.

And by doing that, they lost a lot of what was at the heart of Superman.

Not sure what you mean with X-Men, except for Origins, which feels a little bit like an "Underworld" movie.

reply

I mean more comics to film with X-men. X-men comics has a lot of fantasy elements that you will never see on film unless they change it up to originate from science. I brought up this example before from another thread. Someone posted a thread about bringing some other stories into the X-men movies. He said that the Phalanx (an alien race in the comics) could be an AI created by Forge and Cypher in a lab. X-men shouldn't be be at the point where you'd have to make everything Earth based and overly sciency.

First is irrelevant if dc or marvel is for kids, whats maters is if the movies are good. Second only the sandman, fables( she the game the wolf among us 18+) etc are truly only for adults. 3 Anyone has the opinion of see any movie that he/she likes.

What the heck has happened to History Channel nowadays? Is Vikings the only thing they have worth watching?

Or is this just taking a quote out of context and then creating a really shallow and misinformed comment out of it?

reply

The Dark Knight is actually pretty mature, as is the rest of the Dark Knight trilogy. But that's partially because they take such liberties with the properties.

reply

Hmm. Have you read a non 50s comic? Have you even SEEN a Marvel film? You can't just close your reasoning like this.

reply

Another analogy is two different foods. Marvel is like a good steak dinner with all the fixin's. DC is like cotton candy. You can like both but it's not really a comparison to most people. Marvel simply outclasses DC in every way possible.

reply

The problem is molds. DC, FOX and Sony try to fit in them by changing their properties to be a certain way. The MCU knows what they have and brings that to you. Even though I liked both Amazing Spider-man movies I can see they tried to used hamburger meat and shape it into a steak by trying to make it like the comic and the Raimi movies (to use your analogy). DC got something popular with Batman and did a weird mix of that trilogy and Snyder's (again, I liked Man of Steel). I think if they went further into Snyder's style it would have been better. His style is more fantasy oriented. And that goes for the story, also. X-men seems to be be taking the stick out, but very slowly. Avengers 2 needs to make a buttload of money so X-men can go further than time travel.

Yet Marvel knows when to let their talent create. Certain fanboys hated "The Mandarin" in Iron Man 3 but I thought it was a bold and creative choice to let Shane Black play that card. Most director's feel free to create under the Marvel banner as long as they remember it's a team game.

It's also about hiring the right level of creativity. Marvel using Joss Whedon as their overseer so to speak with Kevin Fiege as overall leader is perfect. The WB has no real vision and hired an all visual hack like Snyder as their overseer. That's a huge difference. Yes, after the disaster that was Batman & Robin the WB stumbled upon and let Nolan do his thing. It worked perfectly following the disgrace of the character. Yet, Nolan's one note grew stale in even in his own trilogy. TDKR is widely considered a terrible film by most general movie fans. Pivoting off that with MoS and beyond is asinine.

reply

I bet Zach Snyder will bow out after BvS because the reviews are going to be awful. It'll make a ton of money to save face but they will know they need to replace him and replace him with a splash.

The Uber Troll has been doing this for 3 years now on The Avengers,IM3 and Cap 2 boards, He makes Extremely positive threads about Marvel Studios films and then constantly bumps them with his Sock accounts, He literally pretends to be different people and actually has conversations with himself.

Example-
Uber made these 2 threads, Literally 90% of the replies are all him pretending to be different people and having conversations with himself with his sock accounts

I am Marvel all the way but comparing the big two is stupid and nonsensical they offer different things to different people. I am actually trying to branch out into DC comics a little. Are we just talking about movies here? I mean DC has gotten some things right in the past as far as movies the original Superman Movies Tim Burton's Batmans and the TDK trilogy and Marvel has made like 2 mistakes at least. I mean IM2 and Thor the dark World are not good.
