Similarities to Thai film 13 Beloved

While watching this film I could not help but to compare it to another film I saw, that being the 2006 Thai film 13 Beloved. They are similar in many ways. People who liked Cheap Thrills would probably like 13 Beloved as well since they are about high stakes wagers and losing your humanity for the sake of money. Anyhow, I will list the similarities, but before I do I must warn that there are spoilers for both films. So read them at your own risk.

**SPOILERS **

The protagonists of both films are reserved, hesitant types who wear glasses and recently got fired from their job.

The characters are forced to carry out increasingly horrendous tasks to get money.

The characters have to eat nasty food at one point. In 13 Beloved it's feces off a plate while in Cheap Thrills its cooked dog.

The most striking similarity though is the ending where one person can't bring themself to kill the other to win the grand prize and is in turn killed by that other person who then gets the money.

***END SPOILERS***

I enjoyed both films, but whereas Cheap Thrills is sort of a dark comedy, 13 Beloved is a straightforward shocker with a grim tone throughout. Perhaps that's why I liked the latter more. It was one sick and twisted film, and if thats the type of movie someone wants to watch, it wont disappoint.

I'd say the part in Cheap Thrills where Vince looks at the sh*t and says "You want me to eat that?!" was a little nod to '13 Game of Death" maybe

Both arent bad movies, but I thought Cheap Thrills was the better movie. Also, a very similar film is Would You Rather with Jeffrey Combs and Brittany Snow, and that one is the better one of those 3. Though the 3 movies are really good.

You crazy ;) Would you rather is not good film making.

reply

not for you but the movie has its fans and its better than a lot of crap realeasing today like The Quiet Ones and Oculus.

yeah, some elements seemed "inspired" by 13 beloved, but i doubt it, since so few people in the western world have seen it. i gotta say that cheap thrills was boring, predictable and at times laughable. SPOILER! the copout ending was the worst. a good twist might have saved it. SPOILER END!

13 beloved is one of my top 20 faves, but cheap thrills was weak.

I'm not sure you know what "cop out ending" means. Also I'm glad this movie didn't try to pull some retarded twist at the end, it was nice that the game makers played it straight and didn't try to pull some shítty moral lesson on the guy at the end, which is more than I can say for that stupid nonsensical ending for 13 Beloved.

the story of 13 beloved will be continued in the sequel. with the same protagonist. the first page of the 14 beyond manga reveal, that he is not dead.

while unsatisfying and puzzling in the original, the happy ending in the remake killed it for me. they actually joked around with the idea of his wife being the next contestant, but then pussied out of that. i think IF she had been the next contestant, that would have made for a perfect ending.

It also resembles "Would You Rather?" to a degree. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1999995/reference) Though, again, that was definitely not humorous and had way more gore. But the premise is similar - there's even a "hold your breath the longest" competition and a "self-mutilation" one.

For those of you who don't want to watch the foreign language film 13 Beloved/13 Game of death, there is a English take on this called 13 Sins.

since I am not one of the 218 people in the U.S. who actually saw the thai movie '13 bleloved', I can't comment on the similarities.

p.s. you knowledge of random thai films does not impress me.

It's a pretty huge movie, actually. Hence the USA remake. Majority of people I'm friends with that seek out Asian movies are familiar with it. I've seen it downloaded thousands of times on multiple torrent sites.

I think 13 Beloved was better; crazier, more laughs, not completely predictable like this. Both were bad in their own ways. If any one likes Cheap Thrills they'll like that, too. Skip the USA version because something about it is super corny.

I thought so too, but Cheap Thrills was far better.
