I'm Confused
If the police and the media were convinced that Kayleigh and Tim's dad murdered their mother, why would they arrest Tim for his murder? Wouldn't that have been ruled as self defense?

shareI only guessed Tim got put away in a mental asylum - where I assume he returned at the end of the movie - due to the fact he kept screaming the mirror did it. At the beginning of the movie when he's released it's stated he's been locked up for eleven years - that seems excessive for a delusional kid who acted in self defense.

Yeah, as the dude above put it there was probably no doubt that Tim had done the right thing by killing his dad but any ten-year old claiming that a mirror possessed his mum and dad and tried to kill him and his sister will definitely get put under a psychiatric order.
He was not arrested, well he would have been originally, but he was actually committed to a psychiatric hospital. No charges, just an order that he was a disturbed child.
