Question about when they were both outside (***spoilers***)

So when they both ran outside and Tim called the cops, and then they watched themselves open the drapes and stand in front of the mirror. Were they outside or were they standing in front of the mirror? Later Tim says they were herded up the stairs, and therefore they made the right call outside. I *think* that means they are standing in front of the mirror, because the mirror wants to keep them plenty busy so they don't reset the timer -- that way the anchor hits Tim and Kaylie, and not the mirror. Do I have that right?

Only sadly for Tim, he woke up and set off the anchor, just like the mirror wanted to. Although I think it wanted to collect both their souls and not just Kaylie's.
